A. D. Rahman Ahmad Onaz was born in Calcutta, India, in 1945. He graduated from the National College of Music (now Rabindra Bharati University), University of Calcutta, in 1962; received his PhD in musicology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1967; and studied musicology at the Institut de l'Esthétique Musicale (Paris) in 1969
Rahman is the recipient of several awards for excellence in music composition and also serves as professor emeritus at UCLA, where he taught courses on Asian music, philosophy of music, and the history of Indian classical music for over thirty years.
